For thousands of years this great prayer was kept as secret because of the instructions in the prayer itself instruct that it should not be taught indiscriminately.

The proper method of reading it is to first read Narayana Hrudayam, then Lakshmi Hrudayam and then again Narayana Hrudayam. This stotra should be received from a Guru who is able to empower the mantra as well as teach how it should be chanted.
